virtual consanguinity
In this red series, I incorporate personal email from a matrilineal source that has traveled, via cyberspace, from Venezuela. The email text functions as texture and line; other formal attributes--the use of the squares and grids or the measurement and proportion of a rectangle--are rooted in traditions of abstraction, yet in this series, bow to the aesthetics of email. The @ symbol references the expectation of a fixed connection between person and place, yet at the same time, given the fluctuating nature of cyberspace, also reveals instability. For me, this instability parallels a larger sense of dislocation emblematic of the person in exile, even if such exile is voluntary. [ For Jeannette ]
