Precipitated by Venezuela’s intertwined crises of authoritarianism, violence and corruption, millions of Venezuelans have left, in the largest ongoing migration crisis in the Americas. Many who came to the US carry the intergenerational trauma of past dictatorships, a common thread in Latin American history, and see the current unraveling of democracy in the US through this lens. This text work registers the active, movable bits and contours of democracy, against what we think as solid moral ground, integrating the inevitability of democracy’s movement as political figures change, and raising questions about how we might defend and invest in the regular construction of its continuity.
